"The Faith of Jackie Robinson"
Dr. Gary Scott Smith

What might we see beyond the remarkable legacy of Major League Baseball’s first black player, Jackie Robinson? How did Jackie Robinson – inspired by his Christian faith, help smash racial barriers not only in baseball but also in politics, business, religion, and society? Dr. Gary Scott Smith, in his book Strength for the Fight: The Life and Faith of Jackie Robinson (2022) says “Robinson arguably did more to improve American society after retiring from baseball than any other athlete” (262). Gary Scott Smith joins us today from North Carolina.

Dr. Gary Scott Smith is professor of history emeritus at Grove City College. He is also an ordained Presbyterian minister who serves as a parish associate and the director of the mission program at Saint Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, North Carolina. He taught at Grove City College in western Pennsylvania from 1978 to 2017 where he chaired the History Department. He earned his M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in History at Johns Hopkins University.
