"My Conversion, Mary, and Missions"

How does God send a boy who grew up in Boston, earned a degree from a school in Waterville, Maine, to live for 18 years in Nigeria with his wife and four children? This is the story of George Rideout, Jr. His life intersects with Billy Graham, Roger Babson (founder of Babson College), the historic Park Street Church, the continent of Africa, two renowned foundations, and a school that emerged in Weston, Massachusetts – preparing tomorrow’s leaders – centered Christ, grounded in God’s word. As in Isaiah 6:8, George’s life resounds, “Here am I. Send me!”
George Rideout, Jr. graduated from Colby College and studied at Gordon Seminary before moving to Nigeria where he and his wife Mary served as missionary math teachers. George leads the Gravity Research Foundation and Open Church Foundation (both founded by Roger Babson with the strategic partnership of George’s father George Rideout, Sr.). George is also the Chairman of the Board of Veritas Christian Academy.

How does God take a man who perfected moves on the gritty division one college wrestling mat to skillfully position himself in the realm of Artificial Intelligence, monetizing a start-up, and creating a scholarship for high school athletes - all at the age of 24 - while being an officer in the Army? This is the story of Ryan Hetrick. As in Psalm 78:72, Ryan is leading others “with skillful hands.”
Ryan Hetrick is a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Technology and Public Policy program. His work is in the Artificial Intelligence Policy space, and he is researching how the United States can continue to innovate and lead in the field of AI while doing it in an ethical way. Ryan graduated from West Point in May of 2021 and is currently a Second Lieutenant in the Army in the Cyber branch. At West Point, Ryan wrestled all four years and was a captain of the wrestling team his senior year. He is from Bemus Point, New York, just south of Buffalo.

His book Relational Spirituality: A Psychological-Theological Paradigm for Transformation written with Dr. M. Elizabeth Lewis Hall, his wife, is published by InterVarsity Press (2021). He earned an MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology. His MA and doctoral specialization in Measurement and Psychometrics is from UCLA.

Dr. Nathan Barczi is Associate Director and Senior Theologian for the Octet Collaborative at MIT. He has served as Associate Pastor at Christ the King Presbyterian Church since 2014. He holds a PhD in theology from the University of Nottingham and a PhD in economics from MIT. He did his undergraduate work at Stanford University in his native Silicon Valley. He lives with his wife and three children in Somerville.

Pastor Sewava Julius Mwakwe is a seasoned worship leader as the music minister for the National Fellowship of Born-Again Pentecostal Churches, Kampala REGION. He was also the World Trumpet Mission Music coordinator (1996-2004). He was Vice Chairman Gospel Stage for Kampala City Festival (2014) and Music Director National Jubilee Choir (2012), even serving as the Music Director for the Reinhard Bonnke Crusade in Uganda. Today Pastor Mwakwe helps lead The Pursuers Worship Network and is a member of Watchmen on the Walls of Massachusetts.

Gary Scott Smith joins us today from North Carolina.
Dr. Gary Scott Smith is professor of history emeritus at Grove City College. He is also an ordained Presbyterian minister who serves as a parish associate and the director of the mission program at Saint Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, North Carolina. He taught at Grove City College in western Pennsylvania from 1978 to 2017 where he chaired the History Department. He earned his M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in History at Johns Hopkins University.

Have you ever gone to church feeling like you have to pretend? People are smiling but you feel horrible inside? Perhaps you are overwhelmed by sorrow or sense of doom? A dark clouds looms over you while it seems the sun is shining on everyone else. Does the Bible speak to us in those times? There is a word that is rarely used in churches today, that provides a biblical and practical way to respond. “Lament.” Psalm 22:3 says, “O my God, I cry out day by day…” Dr. Sean McDonough joins us to explain more.
Dr. Sean McDonough is a professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He arrived from Pacific Theological College in Suva, Fiji, where he served as the Chair of the Biblical Studies Department and as a lecturer in New Testament. He earned his bachelor’s in history from Harvard College, his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees are from Gordon Conwell and his Ph.D. is from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He is married to Ariana. They have four adult children.

Danny Yamashiro is the radio and podcast host of The Good Life with Dr. Danny, a daily Christian talk show in New England on WEZE and WROL of Salem Media Group Boston. He is a chaplain at MIT and co-chairperson of the Cambridge Roundtable on Science and Religion. He has ministered in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, North America, South America, in the Pacific and Atlantic islands. He earned his Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School with research on the formation of American presidents at the intersection of childhood trauma and religious education. His master’s with a concentration in government is from Harvard Extension School. Earlier degrees are from Talbot School of Theology and Biola University. Danny miraculously survived falling 400 feet from a cliff in Hawaii while free climbing, at age 18. He is the founder at president of JCCY, Inc., with Formation Institute, a division based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Danny is married to Jamie. They have three adult children.
