How does a man from Kampala, Uganda who loves to worship God come to Boston as a pastor and worship leader? This is the story of Pastor Sewava Julius Mwakwe, where lessons of faith, courage, and God’s provision are real. As in 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
Pastor Sewava Julius Mwakwe is a seasoned worship leader as the music minister for the National Fellowship of Born-Again Pentecostal Churches, Kampala REGION. He was also the World Trumpet Mission Music coordinator (1996-2004). He was Vice Chairman Gospel Stage for Kampala City Festival (2014) and Music Director National Jubilee Choir (2012), even serving as the Music Director for the Reinhard Bonnke Crusade in Uganda. Today Pastor Mwakwe helps lead The Pursuers Worship Network and is a member of Watchmen on the Walls of Massachusetts.

What might we see beyond the remarkable legacy of Major League Baseball’s first black player, Jackie Robinson? How did Jackie Robinson – inspired by his Christian faith, help smash racial barriers not only in baseball but also in politics, business, religion, and society? Dr. Gary Scott Smith, in his book Strength for the Fight: The Life and Faith of Jackie Robinson (2022) says “Robinson arguably did more to improve American society after retiring from baseball than any other athlete” (262). Gary Scott Smith joins us today from North Carolina.
Dr. Gary Scott Smith is professor of history emeritus at Grove City College. He is also an ordained Presbyterian minister who serves as a parish associate and the director of the mission program at Saint Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, North Carolina. He taught at Grove City College in western Pennsylvania from 1978 to 2017 where he chaired the History Department. He earned his M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in History at Johns Hopkins University.

Have you ever gone to church feeling like you have to pretend? People are smiling but you feel horrible inside? Perhaps you are overwhelmed by sorrow or sense of doom? A dark clouds looms over you while it seems the sun is shining on everyone else. Does the Bible speak to us in those times? There is a word that is rarely used in churches today, that provides a biblical and practical way to respond. “Lament.” Psalm 22:3 says, “O my God, I cry out day by day…” Dr. Sean McDonough joins us to explain more.
Dr. Sean McDonough is a professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He arrived from Pacific Theological College in Suva, Fiji, where he served as the Chair of the Biblical Studies Department and as a lecturer in New Testament. He earned his bachelor’s in history from Harvard College, his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees are from Gordon Conwell and his Ph.D. is from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He is married to Ariana. They have four adult children.

Jahan Berns is an attorney and the COO of the two sister Christian organizations: JH Israel; and U.S. Israel Education Association (USIEA). Jahan migrated from Africa to England, and finally to the U.S. She practiced law at the law firm of Sirote & Permutt, in Birmingham, Alabama, until the Lord called her to serve Him in ministry. Jahan is married to Bob Berns and they have two children.

Paul Atwater was the founding pastor of North River Church (launched in 1989) and continues to serve as the Senior Pastor. He graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois, and Denver Seminary in Colorado. He has a passion and gift for communicating God’s grace and love to people who did not grow up with strong church connections. Paul and Susan have been married since 1981, with two grown daughters.
